MICHAEL HSU has been the second concertmaster of the SWR Symphony Orchestra since 2009. He gave masterclasses at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart in 2010 and 2011 and has been a lecturer there since 2012. In WS 2013/14 he taught the class of Prof. Anke Dill as a representative during her maternity leave.
From 1995 to 2000 he received violin lessons from Prof. Ulf Hoelscher at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe and had piano lessons since 1993 at the Musikhochschule Freiburg.
From 2000 to 2005 he received violin lessons in the masterclass of Prof. Igor Ozim at the Musikhochschule Bern. After graduating from high school in autumn 2003 he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. From 2005 he studied in Vienna under Prof. Christian Altenburger violin and passed the diploma examination with distinction.
In 2011 he graduated with honors from Prof. Anke Dill in Stuttgart.
As a young violinist and pianist, Michael Hsu won three first prizes in 1998 at the 35th national competition "Jugend musiziert". He earned the Leonberg Music Prize and the Prix d'Espoir of the Fördergemeinschaft der Europäischen Wirtschaft. He was awarded the Eduard Söring Prize by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. He also received the Diethard Wucher Prize.
In international competitions Michael Hsu won numerous awards: He is the winner of the Violin Competition of the European broadcasters "Concertino Praga", the third winner of the "Louis Spohr" Violin Competition in Weimar, the fourth winner of the VIII International "Jean Sibelius' violin. Competition 2000 in Helsinki and in the same year second prize winner of the XX. International Violin Competition "Premio Rudolfo Lipizer" in Gorizia.
In 2005 he was awarded the "Bärenreiter Prize" as part of the ARD competition. From 2001 to 2004, Michael Hsu was funded by the German Musical Instrument Fund. Violin and piano recitals as well as chamber music concerts were given by Michael Hsu in Germany and in other European countries. He has performed with renowned orchestras such as State Philharmonic Rhineland-Palatinate, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and was heard at the stations SWR, SDR, BR, DL, DRS and ZDF in radio and television recordings.
